Benjamin Ginsberg/DriftwoodFoto's Smithsonian Annual Photo Contest finalist image in the Americana category of F/V Pamela Rose leaving Newport Bay

Benjamin Ginsberg/DriftwoodFoto’s Americana category finalist image from the 2014 Smithsonian Annual Photo Contest of F/V Pamela Rose leaving Newport Bay. Contest winners will be announced on May 15th. Reader’s Choice voting is ongoing now through May 6th. You’re votes are appreciated!

The fishing vessel Pamela Rose, part of the historic Dory Fleet based out of Newport Beach, CA, heads out of Newport Bay as the light just begins to break through the early morning fog. In an area so close to the glitz and glamour of Los Angeles, and known for it’s wealth and exclusivity in it’s own right, this photo highlights the hard working fishermen who have been plying the local waters long before the explosion of suburbanization. Trailed by hundreds of seagulls, the lone fishing vessel in Southern California could easily be at home off the coast of New England, Outer Banks, or Pacific Northwest.

Reader’s choice voting for the 2014 Smithsonian Annual Photo Contest is ongoing daily until May 6th at http://www.smithsonianmag.com/photocontest/photo-contest-finalists-11th-annual-180950372/ . Your votes are appreciated!
