Stood out in the rain for hours, getting soaked through my jacket, cheap plastic bag over my camera, waiting to get the shot during the most recent hurricane swell. If this was the east coast that might be fairly common, but this is southern California. We’re in the midst of a massive drought and water crisis. Rain in July? Unheard of. The Anaheim Angles had their first home-game rain postponement in 20 years. But while most ran inside to take shelter, the few of us who stayed out on the sand or in the waves of Newport Beach scored some fantastic waves in a seemingly empty lineup, that only hours before, and mere minutes after, was as crowded as Lower Trestles.
